John Broad Artist bio (from National Gallery of the Cayman Islands)

John Broad

John Broad graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a degree in painting and drawing, and from the University of London with a teaching qualification.

He taught art in Vanuatu, in the South Pacific, before settling in the Cayman Islands. His work is influenced by the islands’ maritime culture and is recognisable for its loose brushwork and bold palette.

Broad has taught in local schools and at University College of the Cayman Islands, and has run numerous workshops on behalf of the NGCI and the Visual Arts Society. In addition, he has created two commissioned murals in George Town (‘The Walls of History’ in 2004 for NGCI and ‘Fort George’ for the National Trust in 2012). In 2009, Broad was chosen to exhibit in London and Berlin with ‘Art Below’. Previously, he won the Carib Art poster competition in 1992 and was a recipient of the Cayman National Cultural Foundation award for achievement in art education, as well as for his contribution to the arts of the Cayman Islands in 2003.

His work was featured in the prestigious international travelling exhibition ‘Carib Art’ (1995), and many NGCI exhibitions including ‘Founded Upon the Seas’ (2012), ‘Art of Assemblage’ (2013), ‘All Access’ (2015), ‘Saltwater in their Veins’ (2017), ‘Upon the Seas’ (2017), ‘Mediating Self’ (2017), ‘Cross Currents – 1st Cayman Islands Biennial’ (2019), and ‘Island of Women: Life at Home During our Maritime Years’ (2020).

When it comes to watercolour paintings, artist John Broad is in his element.

The British-Caymanian resident has spent years capturing the buildings, boats, people, music and spirit of the islands – and foreign locales – through his work. His pieces have been featured in multiple exhibitions, and many are held in private collections.

Dameon Doorgen Artist Bio.

Damien Doorgen

Damien Doorgen is a self-taught artist and has been painting wildlife and portraits over the past 4 years. His only training was in Visual Arts Drawings for two years in High school. Picking up the paintbrush as part of a Therapy session one evening in 2018, he fell in love with every aspect of Acrylic and Oil painting. A series of online tutorials and general trial and errors later, Damien started coming into his own and finding his artistic style. Ever since, he has produced pieces of works that are highly sought after as his works feature beautiful wildlife portraits captured with such intensity in their expressions that captivate his viewers. Being a comic book nerd and avid fantasy reader at heart, he also paints comic characters and and other popular characters and places.

Joining the ArtCollective Team to be a part of the Schooner Exhibition has been a very exciting experience for Damien. Painting seascapes and Schooners has always been something he wanted to get involved with doing and he has produced three pieces for the Exhibition. These pieces can be described as using Realism mixed with some Expressionism to give the desired Bold effects.

The following are some of Damien Doorgen other recent paintings. (Some are Sold).

Tiffany Pollin Artist Bio

Her Pages- For as long as I can remember, I have known that being a Caymanian woman is something  important.

My granny from West Bay, and grandpa from West End, Cayman Brac, raised nine children in Cayman Brac, during very harsh times. The only choice for an income, was for my grandpa to go to sea. He worked as an engineer aboard different ships, and even ran sugarcane from Cuba.

I grew up hearing of the hardships and of how Caymanian women of earlier generations were some of the most resilient, hardworking and innovative people imaginable. They created cures from the plants around them, children learned to read using the family bible, they had to build and repair homes, run businesses, fish, grow crops and feed families.

Caymanian women had to survive and ensure that future generations thrived. From humble beginnings, we have had Caymanian women gain rights and change the business and political landscape long before it was the norm.

My grandpa said that Caymanian men built the Cayman Islands, but it was the women who held it up in the toughest of times.

That has always stuck in my mind, not only as a very strong visual, but also as a meaningful statement. Her Pages was a part of the National Gallery’s “ Island of Women” exhibition in 2020.

Raphael Powery Artist Bio.

Raphael Powery was born in the Cayman Islands with a rich cultural history from his Caymanian and Filipino background. Growing up in West Bay and eventually briefly living in the Philippines after Hurricane Ivan, he had the opportunity to explore both sides of his heritage and enrich himself in their histories. After returning, he would continue his studies at Cayman Prep, where he would take art into his A-Levels with a special love for watercolour. Over time, he eventually lost his way with art – until finding his wife and son in the American Midwest who reignited his passions. Now reinvigorated, his artistic goal is to share the Caymanian spirit, culture and history with others through art and fully realise his skills in watercolour, acrylic and oil painting.

Raphael Powery

Powery is new to the scene only recently practicing his craft since 2020 and has exhibited at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands Art Under Lockdown (2020), Interior and Interiority (2020), the National Gallery Biennial Big Art Auction 6 (2020) and Big Art Auction 7 (2022) , and has performed a live painting show and solo exhibition at Lobster Pot for Cayman’s first Art Week (2021).

Emma Laurenson Artist Bio

This is my first piece for an exhibit and I have only started to get back into painting, however I have always enjoyed the creative process.

As a high schooler I loved art and it was by far the highest grade I achieved in my Higher exams. Going to university I studied   BA Business Management, MSc Multimedia Communications (including 2D and 3D animation, movie editing, digital art and web design), and finally a PGDE. Along the road of study, I stalled in my own art and only occasionally or when the notion took me would I pick up a brush or pencil, or dabble in paper crafts or even beading and jewellery making. Even though I always had an ample stock of paints, papers and all manner of creative goodies.  More recently I began to re-explore photography and digital art, taking some courses on Adobe photoshop and illustrator.

I have worked as an educator for over ten years, with a passion for art and sharing techniques and strategies with the budding and developing artists in Primary School. I also take a class at the NGCI encouraging my students to be creative, develop their skills and explore the wonderful talents of local artists exhibits.

I am excited and honored to be part of the Smooth Sailing exhibit, alongside so many wonderfully talented artists. I am truly humbled and inspired  by the talent and skill that is right here on this island we call home.
